What?

When you picture a grand family estate, the kind of place you’d expect to see on a postcard promoting the English countryside, Lippe Garden House is exactly what you’d conjure to mind. Except it’s tucked away in one of Germany’s most underrated regions. Entering through unassuming gates, you find yourself in Lippe’s largest working farm, an impressive 700 hectares of farmland and 200 hectares of ancient forest. A gravel path snakes its way past red-brick buildings and green-rusted tractors, to a cream-coloured building with picture windows and a tiled roof. Its front garden is bursting with colours from the pink and purple flowers that grow in perfectly rectangular flowerbeds.

Inside are two individually-designed apartments (which can be connected on request). They are both a masterpiece in modern design. Expect duck-egg blue kitchens, exposed wooden beams (in the upper apartment), simple-but-bright furniture, soft-green textiles and bold artwork. But far from feeling too perfect, the apartments - along with the family who owns them - are more than welcoming. Drinking coffee while overlooking the walled herb garden is our new favourite way to start the day.

Why?

I fell in love because...
  • The family who owns the property are so excited to share their peaceful corner of the world with guests, and as a result, truly make you feel at home
  • The whole region is underrated, and therefore perfect for a restorative break away from the hustle and bustle of big cities or tourist hotspots
You must...
  • Detmold is an under-the-radar town in NRW, and the Ancient Romans fought battles against local tribes in the area - check out the Hermannsdenkmal, a memorial to such battles
  • Relax in the farm grounds, the gardens are planted with beautiful flowers, fruits and trees
You might dislike...
  • The apartments are tucked away from reality on a working farm, meaning at certain times of the year, the grounds are a hive of activity
  • If you want to get into town or explore the local area, you really need a car

Venetia Malim

Who?

Introducing Venetia, Lippe Garden House’s Custodian!

“The house and grounds have been in the family for generations; we are very excited to open up part of it to guests and share this peaceful corner of the world.”

She loves…

“The house with its two apartments is surrounded by 700 hectares of farmland and 200 hectares of forest, meaning the nature here is spectacular.”

Venetia’s insider tips

  • Visit the Externsteine, an iconic natural sandstone formation, which is also a protected cultural monument
  • Take a hike up to the Hermannsdenkmal, the surrounding forest is beautiful, and the monument represents a vital turning point in Middle-European history
  • Rest and recharge; it’s very rare to have such sprawling, untouched nature on your doorstep that is completely private
  • Visit the Hochschule fur Musik, located in Detmold, and watch one of their many music concerts - some incredibly talented musicians pass through this institute

What people
are saying.

“The family did a great job by creating the apartments. They used high-quality materials and stylish furniture. The estate is surrounded by an old German landscape with a 500-year-old tree. Very special and beautiful!”
