This unassuming stone building at the heart of Gundelfingen, a sleepy town at the edge of the iconic Black Forest (more specifically, Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald), is a historic hotspot. Built in 1824, this former barn and stables is the only farm in the centre of town. The last farmers were owner Melanie’s grandparents, from whom she inherited the barn. As the region expanded, it became less sensical for it to house animals, and - along with her husband Ron - Melanie began to dream of what the building could become: a collection of stunning holiday apartments that would allow others to enjoy the beauty of the region.
During the renovation period, tons of old straw and farmyard scraps had to be removed: old agricultural tools, cartwheels, ox harnesses and ploughs. Also unearthed were an old gravestone and a firearm from the Second World War, items you can now view in the local museum. Many of the materials were reused, and exposed stone walls and wooden beams are matched with modern and vintage furniture, creating a high-end relaxed feel. Melanie and Ron carefully curated each apartment, funnelling their love of good design into the apartments, and the results speak for themselves.
